La notizia è emersa dal sito ufficiale di Sony Computer Entertainment Korea. Si tratta di una nuova edizione di PlayStation 3, con hard disk da 80 GB, della quale, peraltro, si era diffusamente parlato in passato. La nuova edizione di PlayStation 3 ha un costo di 518 KRW, pari a 412 euro. Debutterà sul mercato coreano il prossimo 16 giugno.
Il nuovo modello della console di Sony non sarà dotato del chip Emotion Engine per garantire la retrocompatibilità con i giochi PlayStation 1 e 2. Così come accade con le PlayStation 3 europee, tale retrocompatibilità è affidata ad una soluzione in parte software ed in parte hardware.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe conferma le intenzioni di Sony di introdurre sul mercato una nuova edizione della console, ma smentisce che questa possa essere commercializzata anche in Europa. Le indiscrezioni sull'edizione di PlayStation 3 con hard disk da 80 GB si erano diffuse da perecchio tempo a causa dell'inoltro, da parte di Sony, di una richiesta di cambiamento di parte delle specifiche di PlayStation 3 alla Federal Communications Commission.
Al lancio della console in Giappone e Nord America, sono stati immessi sul mercato due modelli di PlayStation 3: una dotata di hard disk da 20 GB, l'altra con hard disk da 60 GB. Al lancio in Europa, invece, è stato reso disponibile solamente il modello con hard disk da 60 GB. Nello scorso aprile, inoltre, il modello con hard disk meno capiente è stato ritirato dal mercato del Nord America, per cui resta in commercio solamente in Giappone.
